Understanding Venous Reflux Disease

The healthiest veins in your legs have valves that open and close, allowing blood to flow to the heart. If these valves no longer function, they can cause venous reflux disease. Take a look at the picture below.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Varicose Veins
  • Leg Pain
  • Leg or Ankle Swelling
  • Leg Heaviness and Fatigue
  • Restless Legs
  • Aching or Cramping
  • Skin Changes or Rashes
  • Burning or Itching of the Skin
  • Ulcers, Open Wounds, or Sores

Causes and Treatments

Although several different vein disorders can cause venous reflux disease, it is usually a result of either blood clots or varicose veins. Our cardiologist will offer you treatment options based on your condition. We might also recommend compression stockings or a venous reflux duplex ultrasound to see if you may be a candidate for an RFA ablation, which will be done at our clinic at Costa Mesa.

What is a Radio Frequency Ablation?

Endovenous ablation is a procedure done to damage and close off varicose veins. It has various methods, and one is through the use of radiofrequency energy called RFA ablation. It precisely and effectively treats patients with venous reflux disease.

The Process

As seen in the image above, we make a small incision to insert the catheter that will deliver the radiofrequency energy into the vein. The energy will cause the vein to collapse and seal, and eventually be absorbed into the bloodstream. This procedure reroutes the blood through other healthier veins in your body.
