Dr. Fontes completed his residency in internal medicine at Boston University. He continued at Boston University post-residency for cardiology and heart failure training. Dr. Fontes joined the prestigious NIH-NHLBI cardiovascular epidemiology study, as a research fellow, dedicated specifically to the Framingham Heart Study. Dr. Fontes pursued a Master of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, with a concentration in cost-effectiveness. Prior to joining Pacific Cardiovascular Associates Medical Group, Dr. Fontes worked in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, as an assistant professor of medicine.
Dr. Fontes is a general cardiologist, board-certified in medicine, cardiology, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiovascular medicine. His clinical interests are preventative medicine, cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease, and coronary artery disease. He was awarded a prestigious Best Teaching Award from the Cardiovascular Fellowship class of 2020 and was a finalist for Rising Star in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Fontes has conducted extensive research in cardiovascular epidemiology including studying the genetics of cardiovascular disease, biomarkers, atrial fibrillation, and inflammation. He has over 30 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals including the JAMA, Circulation, JAHA, and has given several national presentations. For three years he led the CHARGE working group of inflammation biomarkers, an international consortium of cardiovascular genetic research. He served as a guest reviewer for numerous prestigious medical journals, including Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American Heart Association, Atherosclerosis, European Journal of Heart Failure, among others.
Dr. Fontes is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Association. He is the director of Quality and Population Outcomes and Director of Unity Practice Quality at Pacific Cardiovascular Associates Medical Group. He was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
